The Power of Growing Your Own Food: Why Every Child Should Get Their Hands in the Soil!

March 18, 2025

I’ve always believed there’s something special about growing your own food. There’s a kind of magic in planting a tiny seed, caring for it, and watching it grow into something you can actually eat. But for kids, that magic is even more powerful.

When I started involving my own children in growing fruit and vegetables, I saw first-hand how much it changed their relationship with food. They became more curious, more willing to try new things, and, most importantly, more connected to what they were eating.

So, why should every child have the chance to get their hands in the soil?

1. It Teaches Patience & Responsibility

Growing food isn’t instant - it takes care, attention, and time. In a world where everything is fast-paced, gardening teaches kids that good things take time.

Watching their plants sprout and thrive gives them a sense of accomplishment, knowing they played a part.

2. It Makes Them More Adventurous Eaters

I have a house full of fussy eaters, but I noticed that when my kids helped grow a vegetable, they were much more likely to eat it. There’s something about pulling a carrot straight from the ground or picking their own tomatoes that makes them want to give it a try.

3. It Connects Them to Nature

Gardening gets kids outside, away from screens, and into the fresh air. They learn how plants grow, what they need to survive, and how insects, worms, and birds all play a role in keeping our gardens healthy.

4. It’s a Life Skill That Sticks

Knowing how to grow food is something they’ll carry with them forever. Whether it’s a windowsill herb garden or a full veggie patch, they’ll always have the knowledge to produce their own fresh food.

5. It Builds a Sense of Community

One of the most beautiful parts of growing your own food is sharing it. Whether it’s swapping veggies with neighbours, cooking a meal together as a family, or donating extra produce, gardening fosters a sense of giving and togetherness.

So, if you’ve ever thought about growing food with your kids but didn’t know where to start, just pick a simple plant - something like strawberries, tomatoes, or lettuce. Get them involved in planting, watering, and watching it grow. You’ll be surprised at how much they love it, and you might just find yourself loving it too!

One of the best things about growing your own food is using it in the kitchen! Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated, especially when kids are involved. I’ve found that when my children take part in the cooking process, they’re far more likely to polish off every last crumb! (even if it’s something they’d usually turn their noses up at!). Involving kids in the kitchen is a wonderful way to bond while teaching them valuable skills. These crispy courgette fritters are not only easy to make, but they also taste delicious, especially when made with homegrown courgettes from the garden. Plus, they're perfect for those moments when you want a quick and healthy snack but don’t have much time on your hands. So, why not get your little chefs involved today and see what creations they come up with? The possibilities are endless, and the best part is, they’ll be eating their own hard work at the end of it!
